Historic Preservation

The City of Fond du Lac recognizes the need and the desirability to preserve and protect architectural, historical, archaeological and cultural buildings and sites that contribute to the community’s distinctive identity. The Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for designating significant historic properties and reviewing projects affecting those designated properties.

The Certified Local Government (CLG) program was enacted as part of the National Historic Preservation Act Amendments of 1980 and has been established in Wisconsin to further encourage and assist historic preservation by local governments. The City of Fond du Lac is certified by the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and the Department of the Interior as a CLG and meets the following basic criteria:

·        Enforces a local ordinance for the designation and protection of historic properties.

·        Has established a historic preservation commission.

·        Maintains a system for the survey and inventory of local historic properties.

·        Provides for public participation in the local historic preservation program.
