Equipment Operator I

The City of Fond du Lac is accepting applications for an Equipment Operator I. This position will be under general supervision to do semi-skilled and manual work in the operation of light specialized equipment in the performance of various public works construction and maintenance activities, to perform related work as required, and to perform duties of all lower classifications.

The successful candidate will have the experience and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of: operating boom truck, tractor mowers, compressors, air hammers, salt and sand spreaders, rollers, wheel loaders, sweepers, sewer jets, vac-all, etc.; driving single and tandem axle trucks; and assisting with snow plowing and snow removal.

Qualifications include: Considerable knowledge of the operation, servicing, and maintenance of standard and specialized construction equipment; working knowledge of the tools, methods and materials commonly used in public works and maintenance activities; working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices; ability to skillfully operate light or specialized equipment; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions’ knowledge of sanitary sewer system and method used in cleaning sanitary system; and mechanical ability to do minor maintenance on light equipment.

Minimum training and experience required to perform essential job functions include: graduation from high school or equivalent, previous experience in the operation of light or specialized equipment; and current training in Confined Space Entry, Basic First Aid, and CPR.

Special Requirements include: possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial “Class A” Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement; and experience in the operation of construction equipment.

The City of Fond du Lac offers a comprehensive benefit package including health and life insurance, as well as participation in Wisconsin Retirement. Starting salary is $19.04/hr.
