The mission of the School Resource Officer program is to provide a safe learning environment for students, faculty and community through a cooperative partnership between the FDLPD and the Fond du Lac School District. The FDLPD’s SRO Program consists of five (5) Officers working in the Fond du Lac schools.
SROs maintain open-door policies towards students, engage in informal counseling sessions, and refer students to human services, legal aid, community services, and public health agencies as part of their role as an informal counselor and mentor. Students come to understand that someone cares and will listen, and SROs come to understand where students’ concerns lie and what might be threatening their safety.
Proven benefits of SRO programs:
- Prevention or minimization of property damage in the school and surrounding areas.
- Prevention of student injuries and even death due to violence, drug overdoses, etc.
- Reduction of the need for schools to call 9-1-1.
- Reduction of the likelihood that a student will get a criminal record.
- Increase the likelihood that students will get help from human services and health care systems.
- Increase in feelings of safety among students and staff.
