The City of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is a beautiful and thriving community of 44,678 located at the foot of Lake Winnebago. We are seeking candidates for a full-time Parks Facilities, Forestry and Grounds Maintenance Specialist I.  Scheduled hours are 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This position reports directly to the Parks/Forestry Superintendent and is under general supervision to perform maintenance work on buildings and grounds, forestry and equipment assigned to the Parks and Forestry Division and perform related work within the Department of Public Works as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Building Maintenance and Restoration: General upkeep to include roof repair and trim, plumbing, HVAC work, light electrical and painting. Fix rot on buildings, painting picnic tables and benches, replace shelter support posts, shelter roof bracing, dock repair,  identify hazards and structural issues and plan out what is needed to fix. Inspect playground equipment and fix and/or replace as necessary.  Read blue prints, replace doors and bathroom fixtures.
  • Equipment operation: backhoe tractor, side load operations, chipper, front end loaders.
    • Greasing, cleaning, checking fluids, trouble-shooting problems and repairs.
  • Grass maintenance: mowing with a 12’ or 16’ mower, thatching, upkeep, turf repair.
  • Concrete work: install benches, sidewalks, grills, shelters flat work and posts, playground borders.
  • Recordkeeping: inspect and repair parks equipment e.g. playground maintenance, credit card statements and daily work timecards.
  • Snow Removal in parks and public right of ways; Use 5-yard dump trucks, pick-up truck and plow, Bobcat Articulating machine, UTV’s with plow or broom and snow blowers.
  • Forestry work: Assist with the removal and pruning of trees, along with chipper operation.
    • Knowledge of proper safety protocol for safe chipper operation and traffic control; excellent attentiveness, situational awareness and being able to recognize hazards
      • Working in and around traffic, heat, snow, littered grounds, confined areas such as a bucket truck and uneven terrain.
    • Custodial work: Building and restroom cleaning; general cleaning of grounds.
    • Christmas display: set-up and removal; install all lights, test displays and light electrical work throughout Lakeside Park.

Qualifications and requirements include:

  • Ability to perform heavy physical work for prolonged periods of time under varying weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods and practices used in park and building maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of the methods to control plant and shrub diseases and insects.
  • Working knowledge of first aid practices.
  • Ability to make varied building and mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective public relationships.
  • Skills in the use of tools, large mowers, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a chain saw safely.

Minimum Training & Experience:

  • High School Graduate or GED, with preference given to:
    • Previous experience (2 – 3 years) in building and grounds maintenance including plumbing, carpentry, construction and maintenance; knowledgeable in landscaping, and tree and shrub care.
    • Supervisory experience is desirable.
    • CPR and First Aid training.
    • Any equivalent combination of educational instruction, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License with B, C, D and Endorsement N, air brakes required within 6 months of hire (City provided training)
  • Chain saw safety certification within 12 months of hire (City provided training)
  • Certified Arborist Certification within 24 months of hire (additional compensation – $3,250/annually upon receipt).

Benefits Summary

Starting wage range is $23.88 – $25.50/hour based upon education and qualifications, with potential to receive annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets. Position open until filled.
