The Fond du Lac Police Department is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented professional to join our Property & Evidence Control Unit.

What You’ll Do

As a Property & Evidence Control Unit Clerk, you will:

  • Receive, inventory, preserve, secure, and maintain evidence while ensuring an unbroken chain of custody.
  • Manage and maintain thousands of pieces of evidence in compliance with Wisconsin Statutes, department policy, and Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation (WILEAG) standards.
  • Coordinate evidence submissions to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory and other forensic laboratories.
  • Process, release, and dispose of property and evidence in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Testify in court regarding evidence handling, chain of custody, and digital evidence processes.
  • Assist with firearm evidence processing, NIBIN submissions, controlled substance destruction, audits, inventories, and evidence management operations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to citizens, prosecutors, Officers, Detectives, attorneys, and partner agencies.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records and documentation using evidence management systems.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Ability to successfully complete an extensive background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following is desirable:

  • Property and evidence management
  • Records management
  • Inventory or warehouse operations
  • Customer service
  • Retail inventory control
  • Law enforcement support services

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Perform physical activities including stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, walking, standing, and moving throughout an evidence warehouse and office environment.
  • Exert light physical effort, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling evidence, supplies, and equipment.
  • Safely operate a standard motor vehicle.
  • Work in environments involving temperature fluctuations, dust, odors, noise, biohazardous materials, hazardous chemicals, controlled substances, and other potentially unpleasant or hazardous conditions while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to work-related matters when the Property & Evidence Control Unit Manager is unavailable.

PAID TIME OFF: We offer a generous paid time off package including compensatory time in lieu of overtime, 9 standard holidays, 5 floating holidays, sick leave (7.75 hours/month); and vacation schedule based on previous career and field experience.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package – Non-Exempt Starting Pay $23.88 – $27.93/hour based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
