The City of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is a beautiful and thriving community of 44,678 located at the foot of Lake Winnebago. We are seeking candidates for a part-time Community Development Assistant.
Scheduled hours are 29.5/week Monday – Friday between 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The position reports directly to the Community Development Director. This role provides comprehensive administrative and programmatic support to the Community Development Department to ensure high-quality development throughout the community, to attract real estate investment, and to create a place where people want to live, work, and play.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Assist the public with zoning, floodplain, and subdivision questions in person, over the phone, and via email. Take messages and direct questions to other members of the team as appropriate.
  • Receive and process planning and zoning permits. Track site plan review distribution and comments, including distributing submitted site plans to the appropriate entities, tracking comments, and monitoring site plan approvals.
  • Prepare meeting agendas and coordinate meeting attendance for Plan Commission, Board of Appeals, Downtown Architectural Review Board, and Historic Preservation Commission.
  • Support the Downtown Architectural Review Board, including reviewing applications, preparing staff memos, and attending meetings. Administer building improvement grant programs, including assisting the Director with consulting businesses on available grant funding and tracking grant funds.
  • Maintain the filing system – through the property records, the City’s permitting software, and physical files. Update information within the permitting software when variances, special use permits, or Letters of Map Amendment (LOMAs) are approved.
  • Complete property information requests, Freedom if Information Act requests, and other requests for information relevant to property and permit records. Research parcel history such as variances, special use permits, and building permits at the request of the CD Director.
  • Enter quotes, estimates, contracts, and invoices into the financial software for all CD teams. Support financial and administrative functions within the department.
  • Create outreach materials such as postcards or posters for various public meetings (such as Historic Preservation Month, neighborhood meetings, public engagement meetings). Maintain Community Development website content and application forms to ensure they are current and accurate.
  • Collect and compile data and prepare required reports, including preparing the annual Housing Fee Report and Housing Affordability Report and contributing to monthly department reports. Assist in the preparation of the annual Federal Emergency Management Agency Community Rating System re-certification.

 Minimum Training & Experience:

  • High School Graduate or GED
  • Experience in an office environment required, including demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and navigating digital software platforms and/or databases.

 Special Requirements:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, urban planning, social work, or a related field preferred.
    • The City will consider applicants with any combination of education and experience that illustrates qualifications for this role.

Salary Range: $23.88 – $25.50/hour
