The City of Fond du Lac is accepting applications for the position of Chief Building Inspector.  This full-time position reports directly to the Director of Community Development and will supervise, direct, and coordinate the operations of the Inspection Services Division by administering and enforcing building and zoning codes – ensuring that all buildings within the City are safe to live, work and play; as well as assuring all properties are maintained both interior and exterior; supervising and directing the activities of inspectors and other personnel, and conducting field inspections as required.

The qualified candidate will:

  • Review commercial and residential plans; issue permits; conduct field inspections; answer code questions from architects/contractors/developers; issue Raze Orders or Unfit for Human Occupancy Orders
  • Supervise the other Inspection team, discuss code or inspection issues; work to devise resolution or corrective actions, ensure Division coverage
  • Review and administer Division budget; and submit to Community Development Director for review; discuss municipal code changes or updates with the Community Development Director; address issues with permit processing by Inspection Clerks
  • Assist with customer service and the Inspection counter; assist with phone calls/office coverage as needed; deal with complaints by contractors and public

Responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting the building code for projects and applicability; as part of plan reviews
  • Identifying building code violations on job sites
  • Determining and assigning timeframes for code corrections
  • Answering general inquiries from the public on the phone or at the counter
  • Managing staff
  • Dealing with complaints

Requirements include:

  • High school diploma with four to five years construction and/or inspection experience, or any combination that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Certified in Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code and Commercial Building Code or possess the ability to obtain within 3 months of hire date.
    • Additional certifications in electrical and/or plumbing and/or HVAC desirable.
  • Excellent computer skills as well as interpersonal skills, communication skills, public speaking skills, and the ability to work effectively with citizens, developers and contractors.
    • Multi-lingual a plus.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package ($75,863 – $86,700) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
