Property Lines

Property owners frequently contact the Engineering Division to inquire whether the Engineering Division will locate their property lines/corners or survey their lot.  The City Engineering Division does not perform these services. Property owners who wish to have property lines or corners located or have their property surveyed, will need to hire a Wisconsin Registered Land Surveyor to perform this work. There are numerous local Wisconsin Registered Land Surveyors in the area and most are listed in the yellow pages of the City of Fond du Lac area phone directory.

Surveyor Functions

The Engineering Surveyors are tasked with many duties. Their duties include: Right-of-Way Points – Maintain City Benchmarks – Maintain City Boundary Description – Prepare Plats of Survey and Certified Survey Maps as needed for monumentation of City properties and industrial park lot creation – Topographic mapping for sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water main, curb and gutter, and street reconstruction projects – Capture of feature locations for utility and other mapping using GPS equipment.

Benchmarks *

The term benchmark originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made in stone structures, into which an angle-iron could be placed to form a “bench” for a leveling rod, thus ensuring that a leveling rod could be accurately re-positioned in the same place in the future. The height of a benchmark is calculated relative to the heights of nearby benchmarks in a network extending from a fundamental benchmark, a point with a precisely known relationship to the level datum of the area, typically mean sea level. The position and height of each benchmark is shown on large-scale maps.

The City of Fond du Lac Datum System is the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Visit our Online Mapping page to view benchmark locations and information.
